Choosing the right sconce for your space can really illuminate things! Not every sconce has to be basic, and there are a lot of options to choose from! They are the perfect way to add a fun element to a traditional room.
You can add dimension with your choice of metal, shape, shade or no shade, style and size. Don’t let cords stop you either! I have a few tricks and tips up my sleeve for dealing with those to make sure you have a seamless look.
Upgrading your lighting doesn’t have to be expensive, and it doesn’t have to require an electrician. Most lighting elements come with all the pieces you need for an easy installation. Of course, it is a lot easier to replace an old light fixture than rewire a whole room. But, the beauty of sconces is that you can work with your existing electrical and bring light up the wall, without installing a chandelier or more complicated electrical wiring.
It’s important to consider sconces for spaces near beautiful artwork that you may want to highlight details, or alongside a long hallway to illuminate the way. I also like a sconce as an alternative to an overhead vanity light or bedside table lamp.
Below are some of my favorite sconce picks from budget friendly retailers like Amazon, Ballard, World Market and more!

These lighting finds offer beautiful texture to any space and are also extremely budget friendly. I recommend hanging sconces a little higher than eye level. You don’t want to hit your head or arm on them walking by, but you don’t want them to cast shadows either.
Bonus: Most come in sets of two, so you can use them to anchor.
how do i deal with the cords?
You have two options when it comes to hiding cords! My first suggestion is to cut the cord. You heard me. Cut it! My magic lightbulb from Amazon can be installed in any sconce, and is battery operated. This means that you can install the sconce on a wall that is not near an outlet at all!
My second option requires a bit more of a DIY effort, but it definitely works! Painting the cord the same color as the wall helps hide the seam.
