Wait, what’s the difference between rattan, wicker and cane anyway?

When I sat down to write this blog post I had to Google the difference between rattan, cane, wicker, woven and all the words I tend to interchange for one another. Who knew they were all different? Okay, I knew they were different, but I didn’t really know exactly how. Before we jump into all my favorite goods that add beautiful texture to a space, I am going to give you a quick breakdown on what’s what just in case you are in the same boat as I was in.
1) Woven- This is the method of weaving.
2) Wicker- A weaving process; not a material. Wicker is the oldest furniture making method known, dating as far back as 5,000 years ago. A common material used in this process is rattan.
3) Rattan- A material. This material is commonly used in wicker weaves.
4) Cane- This is actually a specific part of rattan, which is removed from the thorny outer skin of the plant.
I think my biggest takeaway with that research was realizing wicker is in fact not a material, but actually a process. We could definitely go more in depth with the definitions of each word and even the history of each, but I think those simple descriptions will do the job for now. Okay, let’s jump into the fun stuff now!
