Whenever I am designing a room, I love to incorporate lots of decorative pillows. Not only do they bring a sense of comfort to a space, but they also help tie in all the different elements and the overall style in a room. Today, I’m going to share all of the best pillow covers, as well as where to find the best filling to create the perfect throw.
Best Pillow Covers - A Guide
Pillows have the ability elevate a space by adding pattern, color and texture. And the best part? Refreshing a room with pillows doesn’t require quite the commitment as changing out furniture or painting your walls. In fact, once you have found the perfect pillow inserts (more on that below), you can easily change up the style of your room by popping on a new pillow cover.
When I am itching for a change in my living room, bedroom or even office, my first thought is to simply change out my pillow covers because it is quick, easy and doesn’t a massive budget.
Liven Up Your Space with Pattern
Prints and patterns add visual weight to a room. What exactly does that mean you may ask? The visual weight of a room can be discovered by the area of a room that instantly and almost instinctively catches your eye.
It’s pretty easy to test. When you walk into a room, take a look at the design as a whole. Most of the time, one is able to sense if the room feels visually balanced or if its too cluttered on one side or the other.
When it comes to interior design, the goal is to create a balanced visual weight. Think about it. how would it feel if you walked into a room that had all its furniture pushed into one corner. It would probably feel a little odd—not very balanced.
Because the eye is naturally drawn to prints and patterns, they are great to incorporate into a room that may need more visual weight behind it.
Pillow cases are ideal for adding small splashes of pattern into your home because they don’t require a total “flip” of your space. Simply pick out a few pillow covers that look like “you” and add them to your couch or accent chair. Your patterns can be as bold or subtle as you wish!
Bold patterns in bright colors make a space pop. This is fun if you’re used to decorating with neutrals and want to “try on” a pattern and see how you feel about it. While I tend to decorate with earth tones, I do love the occasional pop of bold color!
Incorporating pattern doesn’t have to look like bright colors and bold prints. This antelope pillow cover is for all the neutral lovers out there who want a rich print that will stand out while not completely stealing the show. I have these pillow covers in my living room and 10/10 recommend them.

Keep It Subtle with Solids
But if you’re not sold on print, there are also plenty of solids that add interest within a neutral space. I personally love to mix these in with some of the patterns I’ve chosen for some contrast - you’ll see that within my throw pillow pairings below. Natural, earthy hues and texture are a great subtle way to incorporate solids!

Helpful tips for pillow inserts and how to properly fluff
Always size up. If I have 20” x 20” pillow cover I will order a 22” x 22” insert to fill it with.
Toss your new pillow insert in the dryer for a few minutes to fluff. Do not use heat. This is also good to do periodically with inserts you’ve already been using that are in need of some refreshing.
Get down feather inserts for the perfect “chop”
Whether you’re a fan of the “chop” or not, it’s important to know how to fluff your pillows. Correctly fluffing your pillows will prevent feathers from poking out and will make your beloved pillow inserts and beautiful pillow cases last much longer.
