With summer in full swing, you’re probably spending as much time as you can outdoors soaking up the sun. Whether it’s a front porch, back patio, or poolside lounge, you want to use any outdoor space you have to the fullest. If you’re like me, you may have done a full patio refresh for the season, complete with new furniture, as well as decor like a cute umbrella and bistro lights. But it doesn’t take long for dirt and grime to settle on your pieces, thanks to them being out in the elements! To keep my patio furniture looking fresh all season long, I have a few tried-and-true cleaning hacks, including some handy products that are a must for keeping those cushions and surfaces pristine.

How to Keep Patio Furniture Clean

Keeping Cushions & Upholstery Clean

If you have outdoor furniture with cushions, you need this upholstery protectant! It is a strong nontoxic formula that lasts longer than many other stain guards, making it worth the price. This waterproofing spray will transform your fabric into water repellent, stain resistant pieces with just one application.

And here’s a video of it in action! I used it on all of our outdoor cushions and some of our indoor chairs. Just apply, and let it sit for about 12-24 hours, that’s it:

What about furniture that already has dirt build-up or stains? Here’s where my favorite cleaning tool comes in: the BISSELL Little Green, which works for carpet and upholstery. It’s small and portable so it’s easy to take outside (or use to clean inside your car!) and it gets the job done. Side note: If you have pets, be sure to get the pet deluxe version.. It’s a game changer.

Our seat cushions and pillows had a few stains from last year, so I sprayed the fabric with Folex spot treatment and let it sit for a few minutes to work its magic. Then I used the Bissell to spray the cushions with clean water and used the suction to remove all of the dirt and stains.

Keeping Your Wood Patio Furniture Clean

The easiest way to keep your wood and teak outdoor furniture clean is with the right oil. This teak oil seals the wood, which makes it water resistant and keeps it looking fresh with a nice shine. It is super easy to apply with a brush or cloth. You can use this on your new furniture, or to restore and refresh pieces that you’ve purchased secondhand! Works with teak, mahogany, pine, beech, oak and more.
